Mind Power
The human mind is amazingly complex, and full of potential. It is a fact that being under certain stressful circumstances shapes it differently and in mysterious ways.
So it's ability to generate new waves of energy, and create something great, is not fully understood.
The theory goes like this: Edward Norton, the normal stressed office worker. He has suffered from insomnia for a long time, which has made him become a compulsive buyer, and a push-over with the need to please people. His brain, soul, body, and mostly mind are in a completely drained state, therefore it is susceptible to any change as a way to get out of its miserable situation. Out of pure desperation the mind is drawn to not only connect but also be controlled by the human's deepest emotions and wants.

Here's where Tyler Durden comes into the picture. An edgy dude, drawn by nothing but his mere instincts, and therefore a character based in only emotions. His existence has an objective, show Norton's character how you need to come out of your shell and live a little.
This personification of The Narrator's wants was entirely created by the power and desperation inside Norton's mind.
Let's take Buddha's words on the matter, he said and I quote: "The mind is everything, what you think you become...". In this case The Narrator's mind was thinking and creating in an unconscious state, running like a little hamster in a tiny wheel. The thinking only stopped when Durden appeared, he played the part of a guide and at the same time the evil temptation.
Our mind is a strong and powerful weapon, it is able to generate incredible things out of determined focus, wishing, or out of pure need. That's how we create situations for ourselves that depend solely on our state of mind. Think positively and positive things will happen, think negatively and you'll probably find yourself in unpleasant situations. Let your mind get pushed and pressed down, and out of stress you'll start seeing a hyped up soap seller with a murderer complex. Pure logic!!
Tyler Durden was the creation of a person The Narrator desperately wanted to be, a mirror image of himself, the main conflict turns out to be that Norton's mind is so damaged, Durden becomes an individual human being.
